I need a vacation. The sooner, the better! My man and I have been 6 months in the trenches with our building project. And these past few weeks, I’ve wanted to run from it all! I’ve been drooling over the idea of loading up our canoe, heading into the mountains and setting up camp beside a quiet mountain lake.
Why not? It would be lovely break and we could relax with nothing but nature surrounding us! No insulation. Or drywall dust. Or paint. Just my man and I, taking it easy in the wilds.
But then, reality sets in. All the mountain lakes are still frozen over. Our canoe has a leak that needs patching. Our van couldn’t make it up into the mountains anyway. Besides, we don’t have the mental capacity for such luxuries right now. Even if we could go, my man and I would both sit there, thinking about our to-do list for when we returned home!
I need a vacation. But I’m not in the frame of mind to take one. Because we’re getting our second (who am I kidding, it’s our eighth!) wind.
Little House Living
We’re still dogging it in our little power shed. I’ve gotten quite accustomed to living in tight quarters. There are some things I’ll miss about this time: the quiet, the rest and the way it slows life. At the same time, I’m looking forward to returning to modern conveniences.
Like having an oven and being able to do baking in my own home. Running water and washing machine. And particularly, moving from a double bed back to our queen size mattress. I keep reminding myself I won’t always have to sleep with one my man’s elbow in my face!
That will be a glorious day! And it’s not too far off!
Progress On the House
My man is busy working late tonight, finishing up the last coat of interior paint. Yes, the drywall painting is complete! Next up? Floors and trim!
We decided to forgo the tedious work of finishing floors with an acid concrete stain. Instead, we’re going to sand the slab until little pebbles are exposed. And then we’ll seal it. Later on, we might cover it up. But for now, it is what it is!
Once the floor is finished, I’m going to start working the trim. I’m waffling on that. Originally, I wanted a home with a light, airy feel. Because of this, I was going to white-wash all our wood trim. But as I looked about the freshly painted rooms, I started thinking a dark, walnut trim would be well suited.
I’ll decide after the floor is finished!
Spring Plans for Outside the House
As close as we are to being “finished,” we still aren’t planning to move in. Why? Because we still don’t have a septic field! That is going in as soon as the ground thaws out.
Oh, and did I tell you we lost our water a few weeks ago? My man figures the earth shifted and a rock cracked the line. Happy day! We have one more thing added to our spring “to do” list!
Health Plans for the Future
My goal in this respect is to get better. This past summer, when we bought the land, I was doing quite well. My man and I thought I could get away with pushing myself a bit.
I did push myself, and I’ve paid for it. In spite of a wonderful season of quiet and rest, my energy just isn’t returning. I’ve started using Doterra essential oils in attempt to help myself along. Whether or not it helps is yet to be discovered.
But I did discover something last week: I have another infection in my jaw! I have to wait 2 ½ weeks before I can get for help. And once I do, I hope we’ll see a step forward. I’ll be attending a treatment center shortly for help.
That’s Just Life
That’s life. Sometimes, bad decisions make us walk through rough waters. And other times, our good decisions make us walk through rough waters. And sometimes, it doesn’t have anything to do with our decisions. It’s just the way life goes.
Our fifth anniversary is coming up the end of May. And know something? I think we’re planning to go on a small vacation, just the two of us. I don’t know where we’re going, but we’re going. We need the break, and so, we’re taking it!
