Do you find yourself fed up with most of the kid’s series at your local library or bookstore? Have you ever felt that there’s just nothing good out there anymore? I certainly have! Today, I’d like to share with you my top picks when it comes to reading series for farm kids. I’m also going to ask you for your favorite!
THORNTON BURGESS SERIES (AGES 4-10)
This series is written in a very simple way, making it wonderful for young minds and readers alike! Your children will be enthralled with the innocent animal adventures of Reddy Fox, Peter Rabbit, Danny Meadow Mouse and many others creatures of the Big Woods and Green Meadows!
While the link below takes you to six of Thornton Burgess’s books, you’ll soon discover there are at least twice that many available online!
LET THE BUYER TAKE NOTE: Thornton Burgess’s purpose in writing this series was to teach children to respect nature, which he does well. However, if you/your family are a hunters, be aware that he usually presents hunting in a negative light, much like the movie ‘Bambi.’
THE SUGAR CREEK GANG (AGES 6-14)
In this series, you’ll be taken back to farm life as it was in 1940’s! The Sugar Creek Gang is about a group of boys living in a rural neighborhood. Written from the perspective of red-haired, freckled faced Bill Collins, readers will soon be galloping through boy adventures with him and the rest of ‘the Sugar Creek Gang.’
Here, you’ll catch cattle rustlers, kill a charging black bear, work to save farm animals, coon hunt with hounds, have fishing and camping adventures while leading a country boy’s lifestyle!
This series has a very strong faith element to it! The author writes with an emphasis on personal relationship with God and is family focused. Genuine and heart-felt, these books will shape the lives of their readers for the better!
LET THE BUYER TAKE NOTE: compared to other old series (such as The Hardy Boys) these books are slower paced. It is farm life, after all! This isn’t to say the Sugar Creek Gang doesn’t have adventures, but the writing style isn’t as action-oriented.
LAURA INGALLS WILDER SERIES (AGES 8+)
Turn back the clock of time with Laura Ingalls and learn about pioneer days, of settling the west! You’ll travel in covered wagons, ward off wolves, blizzards, sickness and grasshopper plagues! IT won’t take long to realize that Laura was a spunky, hardworking, courageous individual who valued her family and worked hard alongside them.
This series covers Laura’s life from the time she was a young, until she has a daughter of her own. Girls of all ages have enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) this 9 book series!
LET THE BUYER TAKE NOTE: if you are purchasing for younger girls, you’ll quickly discover it’s the first five books that have the most appeal (get them here). As Laura grows older and the family settles down, writing makes a turn toward more ‘normal’ events: clothes, sewing, going to and then teaching school, community events, plus her courtship and marriage.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE READING SERIES FOR FARM KIDS?
Instead of offering my children common, modern-day series laced with questionable content, I want to begin building a library I can trust, with simple, old fashioned options.
If your family/children have a favorite old fashioned series, I’d love to know what it is! Please leave me a comment or message me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
