My man loves sweet flavors mixed in with his red meat. Me? Not so much! According to my taste buds, salt, herbs and horseradish are the only things that compliment and draw out the flavor of roast, steak and ribs! Though I am the primary cook in our home, both relationships and cooking require give and take! So I decided to come up with a barbecue sauce that suited my man’s taste, one that I could also consume.

Guess what? After some fiddling around in the kitchen, making him test-taste a few times, we came up with a recipe that suited both of us! And the best part was….?! The base for this sauce came from my home-canned spiced plums! Having a serious overload of these purple fruits last fall, I canned, canned, and canned some more, wondering all the while “what am I going to do with all these plums?!” Not particularly appealing to the eye, jars of these soft fruits took up a large space on the canned goods shelf!

Appealing or not, I’m so glad to have them! This recipe never would have been discovered had we not canned so many. It makes me happy inside: there’s nothing more frugal or wholesome than using what you have to make something new! And that is exactly what we did. Know what else? I think I love this sauce even more than my man does!

If you enjoy this recipe, you may want to check out my free cookbook download, located at the top right corner of my blog’s heading. This recipe is included in the section ‘Sauces, Spreads and Salad Dressing.’

BBQ Plum Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 C spicy canned plums (juice strained off)
  • 1 Tbs onion powder
  • 2 tsp crumbed dry sage
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 2 Tbs black strap molasses
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp hot chili powder

Directions: recipe is best when using home-canned plum recipe! Open a jar and spoon out 1 C plums. Strain juices from measuring cup back into jar. Plop plums into blender. Add everything else and blend until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use. Makes 1 C sauce.

Barbecuing: cook ribs or steak until done on one side. Flip to cook the other side and apply a layer of sauce to the just-cooked topside. When finished to your liking, serve with a small side dish of sauce for dipping.

Baking: place ribs, steak or meatballs in a covered dish. Bake at 375F until done. Remove from oven and slather in plum sauce. Place back in oven and bake for another 7-10 minutes. Serve hot!
